Very interesting.
I walked into Hot Topic yesterday to buy a friend a gift and I noticed that there was a compilation CD out that used one the posters I created for a Deviant show as their album cover.
I don’t know whether I should be pissed or flattered.

Worked on a song tentatively entitled “Last Winter” last night. London sang the lyrics during our last two practices over a piano line that I have noodling over for awhile. Last night I pieced together the drumlines I’ve been working on for the song over the past week and a half. I experimented a bit by running the drums through the filters on my Futureretro 777 and then routing the audio through a small speaker with a crappy speaker wire and then re-recording the sound. Came out lovely. I’ve also done some trashing to the guitar tone in the song but I don’t know if I’ve quite nailed down the sound I’m going for yet. I had a bit of trouble last night with recording latency, for the most part my system is usually pretty stable but the latency was horribly bad last night. I’m not sure if it was just being temperamental or if I’m doing too much processing for my poor machine to keep up with. In any case, manually nudging audio tracks to sync up is a pain in the ass. Thankfully this doesn’t happen all the time.
So far I’ve stayed commited to my goal of using 100% homemade synth patches and all custom guitar tones on this album.

Last night was the first time Deviant has run through it’s entire set list since…….January 2004. It was amazing, it all came back rather quickly. We also rehearsed a bit of the new material, I’m feeling pretty good about it. Things just feel right, it’s good to be back.

While we’ve been working independently on new material for the next album, Deviant had our first “unofficial” rehearsal last night. Unofficial because London wasn’t there. The first “official” one is next week, where we’ll brush off some classic material and work on new songs.
It was interesting, I’ve never been one for “jamming” per se but I had a good time and we got some ideas demoed. I’ll take what we came up with and flesh out the ideas some more with some drums and synths.
It was a bit of a different experience for me, in the past I’ve always come up with the music first and then we just started practicing them at rehearsals once they were fully fleshed out and recorded. That was the case with the 2002-2003 Deviant material and the Divine Reich album I recorded last year.
For Absenta the majority of the music was recorded before Daisho had joined the band. It was just London and I hanging out together at my old apartment on Capital Hill, drinking absinthe, and coming up with ideas. This time he’s getting involved more creatively and we’re coming up with things together. Since we live at the same place it’s easy for me to work up a drum beat and then shoot it over the file server for him to playback up in his room and work on ideas for basslines, progressions, etc.
All in all, I think the creative floodgates have finally opened on all fronts.

How funny…
So I’m out doing domestic things today, like working on my yard and two guys who are working for some lawn aeration business are out in my neighborhood and they walk up to me.
Guy: “Hey I know you!”
Me: “Erm, sure okay.”
Guy: “I’ve seen you at the clubs?”
Me: “Oh yeah! How’s it going? I haven’t seen you in awhile.” (no clue who these guys are)
Guy: “what’s your name again?”
me: “D’ ”
Guy: “Oh shit, you were in that band Deviant right? I have a poster of you from two years ago on my wall at home!”
Me: “Oh that’s cool…yeah I played in Deviant, we’re recording a new album now…blah blah yadda yadda.”
Guy: “You guys rocked! I didn’t recognize you at first without the blue hair. I’m in a band too..blah blah blah…are you going to Rock Island tomorrow night?”
Me: “Yeah maybe, I don’t know yet…” (looks for an escape route)
They ramble on for a bit more and then bid farewell. They seemed pretty amazed to run into me. It’s weird, people come up to me all the time saying they’ve seen me on stage but that’s the first time it’s happened outside of my house.
