And we’re off

Posted on 18 July 2007 by D' MacKinnon

The past year’s worth of music writing goes off to the pressing plant tomorrow.
Divine Reich’s An American Tragedy.
This album features….
13 songs.
40+ different guitar tones.
99.999999999999% analog synths.
1 Linn LM-1 on 3 tracks.
ZERO vocal pitch correction.
Recorded entirely in my home studio.
One song that is a reinterpretation of a song I originally recorded with the first band Kristian and I were in together. It’s very different from the original.
Lyrical content that’s incendiary, meaningful, relatable. Some of it will piss people off.
Lots of experimentation in performance and recording techniques.
One instrument that’s older than anyone in the band.
One song that contains guest contributions by Chris Randall (Sister Machine Gun/Micronaut) and Eddie Suicide (Royal Dead).
The last song recorded was done in an unsual way to increase the isolation implied by the lyrics (You’ll have to ask [K] about it).
All music written by me.
Did I mention this album is guitar heavy? And very glitchy.
One thing we’ve been told from people who’ve heard it is “It’s not easy classified in a genre, there’s nothing out there right now like it”. This is definitely a ROCK album with influences from anything from glitch, sunset strip rock, 1980’s Prince, drum n bass, electroclash to 1970’s David Bowie.
I’m excited and a bit nervous. It’s been awhile since music of my own has been released to the public…let’s review some history.
2003 Deviant’s debut release Absenta, some compilation CD appearances
2004 One promotional release by Deviant and some remix work. Had some music appear in film and tv. Deviant broken up, Divine Reich forms in it’s first incarnation and garners attention from labels. Breaks up. I spend a lot of time drinking and hating music.
2005 – 2006 Deviant reforms, spent a year writing and recording a Deviant album that got scrapped. One Deviant track surfaced to appear on compilation stuff. Worked on Royal Dead’s 1st EP. Band that I worked on since 2002 broke up.
2006 – 2007 Divine Reich reformed. Producing Royal Dead’s full length album and writing/producing Divine Reich’s full length. Formed a record label with my wife/manager/partner Jolene.
I’m sure a lot of people will love it. I’m sure some people will hate it. I’m sure I’ll get some hate mail. But art isn’t safe, art is dangerous.
It’s been a long road but this album is truely an effort that I’m proud to have worked on.

The Divine Reich album “An American Tragedy” is finished with mixing and mastering. I had a marathon session yesterday and got the last of it done, I just got to listen to it in Jolene’s car for the final verdict on the mastering and then it should be ready for the plant. We also have a jewel of a cover song that we’ll be doing something with, won’t be going on the album but it’ll turn up somewhere.
The band has been practicing for our record release show, going to have some sort of a set put together. Probably not a full set but at least a few songs.
I’ll announce more once dates are solidified and the label does it’s magic.

The state of things

Posted on 08 May 2007 by D' MacKinnon

Sorry for the long gap in updates. I’ve been out of town the past 3 weeks taking care of a family emergency. Music stuff has been on hold since mid April. We’re about two recording sessions away from being finished with recording for the Royal Dead album and I’m in final mixing for Divine Reich’s An American Tragedy. The album artwork for the DR album is nearly completed as well. Not much longer now!

Quick D.R. update

Posted on 01 March 2007 by D' MacKinnon

Hey guys, just a check update. Divine Reich had a photo shoot last week, some of the shots will be used in the upcoming album art and some will be promotional shots. The wonderful Jolene did my hair and makeup. This weekend [K] and I are getting the silkscreening done on our t-shirts. There are several designs and shirt colors. These will be limited edition merchandise so once they are gone they are gone for good. More details on when you can purchase said merchandise to come soon.
I finished writing the music for what will probably be the last two songs required for this album. There’s the possibility that we’ll write maybe one more original but it hasn’t been decided yet. The next song I’ll probably work on will be a cover for the b-side of our first single. Hopefully some of you get a kick out of the song we chose (and no it’s not Lionel Ritchie’s Hello).
That’s all for now.

Undiscovered treasures

Posted on 23 October 2006 by D' MacKinnon

Last night [K] and I worked on a reinvisioning of a song I song I originally wrote in 2004, now known as “Last Man on Earth”. I’ll probably rerecord the guitar tracks but I haven’t decided if I want to redo the drum and synth parts. My drum programming has grown since I originally wrote the song but the original drums for this piece seem to fit well with the rest of the layers.
The album is nearly halfway done, the writing has been moving pretty quickly. As the album gets closer to being complete we’ll probably whittle off a few tracks to keep only the strongest and then work on the album art. As soon as our bass player signs his contracts we’re going to have a nice little initation for him that we’re going to tape for his future torment.
My other music projects have slowed, I still want to complete them but I’ve been focused on “the new band” and the record label so I haven’t had much time. Pending some legal issues we may be signing an artist within the next couple of weeks and putting that album out shortly afterward. Right now it’s in the hands of the lawyers…

She Got You Tied With A Golden Rope

Posted on 12 October 2006 by D' MacKinnon

I’ve been rather quiet about what I’ve been working on musically lately. It’s not that I haven’t been busy, it’s that I’ve been too busy trying to do a lot of things and it’s been exhausting me to the point where I don’t really feel much like posting about it.
Things on the record label front have been busy; we’re working on preparations for our first round of real releases and also listening to material by artists we might sign after the first round. We have some events planned that I can’t talk about just yet.
As far as my own music, just tonight I worked on some drum tracks for a new song. I’ve been liking my Fuzz pedal lately and I incorporated it for what will be the chorus for this song which [K] refers to as Provocateur I’m trying not to talk about the tracks on this project too much as I want this to be a surprise when it comes out. While my style is in there, the material is a 180 from work I did with Deviant. You’ll hear what I’m talking about when the first single drops.
There are some other big changes coming up with the label within the next six months (not involving signings or releases). You’ll hear more as the time approaches.

Weekend of Aug 4th

Posted on 05 August 2006 by D' MacKinnon

Spent last night in the studio with a certain young lad. We recorded some vocal overdubs that turned out rather nicely, especially after a little bit of studio experimentation. Two tracks completely recorded and mixed, hopefully next Friday will yield a third.
On Thursday I had Mad Wax over and we finished a track that we had started in our previous session. Next week we’ll clean up the mix a bit and start a new track. Pretty hopping club tunes.
I think the cable jack on one of my guitars needs to be fixed, the connection kept shorting out last night. I opened it up today and tightened some things, hopefully that fixes it because I’d rather not have to replace the jack on this one already.
After our little session I went out for a few drinks, dropped by ol’ Netherworld to say hi to everyone. Despite a slight hangover today from the well rums I was able to record some piano for a trip-hop style tune I’ve been working on. The piano sound itself turned out a bit dark, probably because the strings and hammers on it are old so I threw a little EQ on the track to brighten it up. I had picked up this piano originally from the CU music conservatory, it dates back to the 1920’s I believe. It’s got a sticky key here and there and should probably be tuned again but it’s nice havinig a real piano around. I really can’t stand the sound of fake piano modules in recordings.
