The new Nine Inch Nails album is quite good. I listened to the whole thing today. Very noisy/bleepy/glitchy indeed yet still catchy. Reznor has always been gifted in taking totally quirky musical phrases and fashioning hooks out of them.
It officially comes out on April 17th, I’ll definitely be picking it up.

Last night was amazing.
Jolene and I went to see Bauhaus and Nine Inch Nails at Red Rocks. The last time I saw Bauhaus was on their resurrection tour back in 1998 so it was good to see them. For me, the 1998 show had more audience energy and I thought the band’s performance was better but last night was good in it’s own right. Daniel came up into the crowd by where we were standing with his guitar and Jolene gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Last night was the 5th time I’ve seen Nine Inch Nails and it was probably the best show by them that I’ve seen since the first time I saw them on the Downward Spiral tour when Jim Rose Circus and Marilyn Manson opened for them. The time before this they played in Denver the night the With Teeth album was released and not many people in the audience knew the new songs and it sounded like the band was still working out some kinks. Last night they were in top form, the sound was great and the band was tight. They played a good mix of material off of all the albums and Trent’s voice was right on all night. I was actually so moved during “Hurt” that I got a little teary-eyed and I don’t think that has ever happened to me at a show before. Maybe it was just the right combination of the music and the atmosphere.
In any case, I’ll be standing in line to get tickets the next time they come through town.

Saw NIN and Dresden Dolls last night. Of course I took out my earplugs about halfway through the show so I can’t hear today (yes, I have to wear earplugs now to preserve my hearing).
Dresden Dolls were fun, I’ve had their CD for awhile now. The drummer was really good…since they are a two piece and Amanda was stuck behind her keyboard most of the show the amount of movement they could do was limited. Which is kind of a bummer because it’s kind of boring seeing two people sit for 90% of the show. Still dig their CD though.
NIN came on…I know a lot of the older NIN fans do not like the new CD because they are moving away from being industrial…well, I think it’s a good thing. I respect Reznor as an artist in that he’s not afraid to evolve and not put out the same album over and over. It felt like they still have some kinks to work out, I don’t think the keyboards were loud enough on some of the songs (the mixing didn’t match the album on the newer material occasionally) and while Aaron and Trent were moving around a lot, Jeordie kind of stood in place the whole show….and I’ve seen him perform with Marilyn Manson so I know he can do better.
I think are a few songs on the new CD I would have performed live that didn’t get performed. I liked that they used modular synths live, when you could hear the keyboards they were pretty beefy.
This is the third time I’ve seen Nine Inch Nails perform. I think last night’s show was better than the show I saw for the Fragile tour but not as entertaining as the Downward Spiral tour.
