And we’re off

Posted on 18 July 2007 by D' MacKinnon

The past year’s worth of music writing goes off to the pressing plant tomorrow.
Divine Reich’s An American Tragedy.
This album features….
13 songs.
40+ different guitar tones.
99.999999999999% analog synths.
1 Linn LM-1 on 3 tracks.
ZERO vocal pitch correction.
Recorded entirely in my home studio.
One song that is a reinterpretation of a song I originally recorded with the first band Kristian and I were in together. It’s very different from the original.
Lyrical content that’s incendiary, meaningful, relatable. Some of it will piss people off.
Lots of experimentation in performance and recording techniques.
One instrument that’s older than anyone in the band.
One song that contains guest contributions by Chris Randall (Sister Machine Gun/Micronaut) and Eddie Suicide (Royal Dead).
The last song recorded was done in an unsual way to increase the isolation implied by the lyrics (You’ll have to ask [K] about it).
All music written by me.
Did I mention this album is guitar heavy? And very glitchy.
One thing we’ve been told from people who’ve heard it is “It’s not easy classified in a genre, there’s nothing out there right now like it”. This is definitely a ROCK album with influences from anything from glitch, sunset strip rock, 1980′s Prince, drum n bass, electroclash to 1970′s David Bowie.
I’m excited and a bit nervous. It’s been awhile since music of my own has been released to the public…let’s review some history.
2003 Deviant’s debut release Absenta, some compilation CD appearances
2004 One promotional release by Deviant and some remix work. Had some music appear in film and tv. Deviant broken up, Divine Reich forms in it’s first incarnation and garners attention from labels. Breaks up. I spend a lot of time drinking and hating music.
2005 – 2006 Deviant reforms, spent a year writing and recording a Deviant album that got scrapped. One Deviant track surfaced to appear on compilation stuff. Worked on Royal Dead’s 1st EP. Band that I worked on since 2002 broke up.
2006 – 2007 Divine Reich reformed. Producing Royal Dead’s full length album and writing/producing Divine Reich’s full length. Formed a record label with my wife/manager/partner Jolene.
I’m sure a lot of people will love it. I’m sure some people will hate it. I’m sure I’ll get some hate mail. But art isn’t safe, art is dangerous.
It’s been a long road but this album is truely an effort that I’m proud to have worked on.

The state of things

Posted on 08 May 2007 by D' MacKinnon

Sorry for the long gap in updates. I’ve been out of town the past 3 weeks taking care of a family emergency. Music stuff has been on hold since mid April. We’re about two recording sessions away from being finished with recording for the Royal Dead album and I’m in final mixing for Divine Reich’s An American Tragedy. The album artwork for the DR album is nearly completed as well. Not much longer now!

new music

Posted on 29 November 2006 by D' MacKinnon

I love discovering new bands by accident. I was going through a stack of CDs while trying to organize my music collection and I came across a compilation disc put out by Geffen Records in 2001. It looks like Rob Zombie did the artwork for it but other than that I have no idea how this disc came into my possession. Some of the bands on it I’ve heard before but some were new to me and I dug, the half the bands on it are either crappy now or no longer together.
Hurray for hidden treasures!
In other news, I spent some time today researching some recording studios for some drum tracking. Royal Dead are about ready to go in and record their full length.

More SK recording

Posted on 17 April 2005 by D' MacKinnon

Doing some more production and recording for Suicide Kings today. I’m going to try and get a couple of this songs done for these boys so they can distribute them this summer.
I want to get going on the Deviant material. Lots of ideas for songs in my head, if I don’t get them down soon I’ll probably forget them.

Recording of Suicide Kings begins

Posted on 20 March 2005 by D' MacKinnon

Eddie and Matt of Suicide Kings came over on Saturday and we laid down some guitar and bass tracks. I think it went pretty well, I got to experiment with recording techniques for stand-up bass. I’m going to work on writing some drums and then editing the tracks we recorded.
Feeling creative, writing ideas down. How many grains of sand can one fit through the hourglass.
Had yummy Dim Sum this morning with Jolie and Misha, gonna drop by Misha’s tonight for some Halo 2. Oh yeah, Pacific Ocean Market off of 120th is pretty cool.

Just got home.
Went out to Netherworld and met up with Eddie and his newly found bass player. I’m going to be producing and programming drums for his new rockabilly/punk/industrialish band. For those of you not from Denver, Eddie Suicide was previously a bass player in the short-lived Divine Reich and roadie/guitar tech for me in Deviant. I slated them some studio time next Saturday, should be interesting as it’s definately a new genre for me to work in. I’ve never recording a stand-up bass before so we’ll see how that works out.
Next, Jolene and I went to Wave. Music was good, Cari and Suzanne looked fucking amazing tonight, I wish I had brought my camera. Kristian was supposed to meet up with me but the bastard still hadn’t shown up by midnight so I grew impatient and left.
